Have You Been Geocaching? Geocaching (g-o-cash-ing)
by P.J. Goetz www.tampawithkids.com
What in world? If you liked Easter egg hunting as a kid then your are going to love this game. There are tiny treasure boxes, hundreds of them, hidden all over the world. You find them by using the GPS information you find on the Internet. Once you find them you take a trinket, sign the logbook and leave a trinket for the next person.
There are 586,173 active caches worldwide
Sounds crazy I know! But once you get started you will be hooked in no time. I can easily ensure me kids will behave at school now. All I have to say is "be good at school and when I pick you up we will go caching" and I am almost assured a perfect day from them.
Sound fun?
How to get started:
Visit www.geocaching.com
Get named "Mom of the Day" by your kids. My 10 year old said to me on our first day of caches "I've got to remember this so I can do this with my kids one day"
Tips for the Newbie:
Wear long pants and bring some off. I can show you the scratches on my legs and the incest bites on my arms from failing to follow my own advice.
Hunt small caches or larger ones. The micro caches usually only have log books and the kids love to find trinkets. Remember to leave something if you take something. Stock up at the dollar store or use those silly little toys your kids get that you don't know what to do with
Bring along a pen so you can sign the log book
Cache In Trash Out: Bring along a trash bag and pick up any litter you see along the way. Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers have been dedicated to cleaning up parks and other cache-friendly places around the world. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!
